A deadly duo – nicknamed Flame (Thure Lindhardt) and Citron (Mads Mikkelsen) – work for the Danish Underground as the World War II D-Day invasion nears. Based on two real-life Resistance fighters, they are idealistic patriots and Nazi-haters who specialise in killing Danish collaborators.

But as they are impeded from getting the man they most want to kill, the head of Gestapo in Copenhagen, their view of their actions begins to change as they increasingly discover uncertainty about who their enemies are in the swirls of deception and duplicity.

What starts like a typically romantic war drama soon becomes a film noir about the indistinct nature of what is right and wrong in such shadowy operations, with Flame and Citron beginning to suspect they are little more than tools for others with conflicting or personal agendas.

Despite this grim film's episodic unravelling, it is a moody and murky, absorbing and often tense depiction of the amoral and ambiguous fog of war.
