Eva Cassidy
Albums like Somewhere underline the fact that there was much more to her than simply a tragic figure and that, had she lived, it is highly likely she would have eventually reaped similar levels of acclaim. It has only one Cassidy original, the title track, which has finally been finished off by co-songwriter Chris Biondo. It also includes Early One Morning, an adapted English folk song with lyrics written by Cassidy.
But even with other people's songs, Cassidy makes them her own. Old chestnuts like Gershwin's Summertime and Chain of Fools are revitalised by the effortless beauty of her approach.
There can't be too many more albums' worth of Cassidy's unpublished material lying about, but the mere fact that this is the 10th posthumous collection of undiminished quality speaks volumes about what a huge loss she was.
