"The landscape functions as a mirror and a lens. In it we see the space we occupy and ourselves as we occupy it."

This quote from scientist and mathematician Jacob Bronowski acts as a catalyst for an exhibition in the Refinery Artspace.

Photographer Cindy Flook and painter Paula Cunniffe work together to explore how landscapes tell the story about the people that live in them.

Cunniffe works in mixed media and painting and strives to express the internal processes and thought of the individual from her personal perspective.

"Public and private issues remain a constant feature, exposing the mundane through imagery and text."

She said her work and Flook's photographs on to aluminium sheets work well together and the pair try to have at least one shared exhibition a year.

They both graduated from the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology's Bachelor of Visual Arts programme in 2003.

  • Paula Cunniffe and Cindy Flook, Refinery Artspace to February 13.
