Variety of artists at Collingwood St
An eclectic mix of Nelson artists are moving into an old house together on Collingwood St.
The Collingwood Street Gallery opens today, featuring work by more than a dozen Nelsonians – from emerging to established artists.
The arrangement is temporary, as the old building has been tagged for removal or demolition at the end of January.
Organiser and artist Maria Middlebrook-Wells said six rooms and the building's hallways would be occupied by art for about six weeks – or possibly longer if the gallery was well-received.
Wells emailed artists to see if they wanted to come on board when the building became available.
She had a mixed response, from newly-fledged Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology graduates to well-established local artists like Margaret Johnston and Deb Hunter.
"It is a great opportunity for people who perhaps don't have their work out that much – and it is supposed to be a bit of fun."
- The gallery, at 90a Collingwood St, will open seven days a week from 10am to 5pm until October 23 – unless extended – and opens at 5pm today.
