Fancy a haircut? Dramatix Theatre Development Trust will give you one. That's if you sign up for its latest project – a short film set in a trench during World War I.

The 20-minute film will portray Anzac soldiers' trepidation as they prepare to go over the top of their trench on the Western Front.

Dramatix director TJ Ramsay is seeking volunteer male actors aged 14 to 60 for filming in the Energy Centre at Founders Heritage Park in April.

Ms Ramsay is working with Mapua wartime costume expert Greg Olsen and camera operator Ross Wearing on the project.

They will utilise a "dim and atmospheric" set being built for the Nelson Pine Industries Theatre of War, an interactive display forming part of Lest We Forget 2012 on April 21, 22 and 25.

The film is based on the characters from a Dramatix musical drama entitled Passchendaele.

Ms Ramsay said no experience was necessary. Actors would need a short back and sides haircut, "which we'll take care of".

"They will be given some training in the art of being a soldier," she said. "We are looking for authenticity and reality [and] promise actors a full-immersion experience. They must be prepared to learn how to handle themselves as soldiers of that era, including drills and training." Ms Ramsay said the finished product, Anzacs in the Trenches, 1917, would form part of an education package for schools nationwide.

"The human condition comes to its greatest and weakest moments in times of war. I would like to think that one day we could learn from our mistakes," she said.

  • Dramatix requires actors for speaking parts and extras. Contact TJ Ramsay with inquiries or expressions of interest via dramatix@dramatix.co.nz or 035458102.
