Co-owners of Red Gallery, Sarah Sharp and Caroline Marshall, have opened their second gallery in Vanguard St.
Salt Gallery will be open on Fridays only and launches with a show by established artists David Ryan, Anne Rush, Sally Burton, Christine Boswijk and Dean Raybould.
The aim of the second gallery space is to offer a more spacious environment to exhibit works and for viewing.
"Salt Gallery provides a vibrant and beautiful new space and opportunity to showcase large and powerful artworks by some of Nelson's most talented artists," says Sharp. "We want to provide a gallery for these artists to get their large works out of the studio and give them the space they deserve."
Sharp says they have a huge stockroom of artworks at Red. "Many people don't realise we have a lot of gorgeous artworks out the back, so Salt Gallery provides us with another space to showcase our artists," she says."If those works aren't out in the gallery, it's hard to sell them."
Sharp and Marshall believe Nelson is home to some of the country's best artists and invite locals to support them in their art careers by attending openings, bringing friends to the galleries, and of course, buying artists' work.
Sharp says they are available to open the gallery up at anytime after hours, should people from out of town want to go and have a look. The gallery is two minutes walk from Red, which makes it very easy to take people over.
"The more galleries we have in Nelson, the more vibrant our arts community will be."
