Artistic Director of the Up-Close and Classical Ballet Company, Louise Hawke says the latest production, Ballerina, is "all tutus, tulle and romance; a real classical ballet Christmas treat for ballet lovers."
The triple bill spotlights the glamour of the ballerina and audiences will be delighted to see ballerinas of the past, the present and the future onstage at the Theatre Royal.
Hawke says the Theatre Royal is a fitting historic setting for this one night only gala evening, which also celebrates ten years of performances for the company. Her productions have been critiqued as "elegant, innovative and great fun" and "a rare and magical treat".
Ballerina of the present is Adriana Harper of the Royal New Zealand Ballet (RNZB) currently dancing Don Quixote pas de deux on tour with that company.
Ballerina of the past will feature Hawke herself, a former principal dancer with the RNZB, The Hong Kong Ballet and the National Ballet of Portugal. Hawke will perform onstage partnered by Brendan Bradshaw, principal dancer of the RNZB.
Ballerina of the future? Hawke says that will be for audiences to decide from the beautifully trained and talented young Nelson dancers from the Academy.
Young Nelson graduates have gone on to be classical majors at the NZ School of Dance, the Royal Ballet School and the Pacific Northwest Ballet in the US, as well as tertiary dance training in Australia and freelance dance careers in Europe.
In past years Hawke has presented former students now in tertiary training or with professional contracts overseas and combined these dancers with her young students.
This year all dancers onstage are currently studying at the Academy, apart from guests Bradshaw and Harper from the RNZB.
The programme is Pas de Quatre, the essence of the romantic cult of the Ballerina which originally starred the four most famous Ballerinas of 1845. Napoli & Flower Festival Pas de Deux are from the timeless repertoire of the Royal Danish Ballet. Don Quixote Grands Pas de Deux & Divertissements is a spectacular display of virtuoso artistry from the Ballerina and her partner.
