Arts tutors Ronette Pickering, Adi Tait and Caroline Jones have created a series of summer workshops which will run at the end of January in the Creative Industries Building at the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology. Two other tutors running workshops on the programme are Cliff Fell and Darryl Frost.

"The idea came from the thought that the building is sitting there unused over much of the summer and by the end of January people are wanting to get their teeth into something," says Pickering. "In a week there is a good chance of achieving something."

Fellow-organiser, Adi Tait says they wanted to revive the whole idea of Winter Workshops which used to be offered at NMIT during winter term holidays, drawing tutors from around the country as well as local arts, all experts in their fields.

"Depending how these initial workshops go, we could see this idea grow into an annual event, not just over summer but during term breaks as well," says Tait. "We have a fabulous purpose built facility here and want to utilise the studio spaces as well as local artists workshops in the region."

Workshops offered are : Introduction to Painting - Beginners, tutored by Caroline Jones, Oil or Acrylic Painting - Intermediate/Advanced, also by Caroline Jones, Life Drawing by Ronette Pickering, Ceramics/Sculpture and Wood Firing by Darryl Frost, Photoshop by Adi Tait, and Creative Writing - All Levels by Cliff Fell.

Jones says the beginners introduction to painting workshop is hands-on, using traditional oil paints although she can offer tuition in acrylics as well.

"The focus will be on painting still life, copying the masters, and colour mixing, with painting demonstrations included," she says.

Jones also offers an intermediate/advanced course in acrylic and/or oil painting. The workshop offers students a chance to immerse themselves in full time painting for 5 days where three projects will be the focus; life painting with a model, developing your own subject and experimentation with mark making and colour. This workshop also includes a tutorial on stretching canvas.

Tait is offering a Photoshop workshop which she says would suit artists, who can manipulate and develop ideas on screen, as well as people like photographers.

"Photoshop is a cool tool for playing around with images, changing them, touching up photographs," says Tait. "It also provides the means for artists to make their own promotional material, as well as for beginners just wanting to get started."

The Ceramics and Wood Firing workshop tutored by Darryl Frost will be held at his workshop out on the Kina peninsula, where he has one of the largest wood fired kilns in the country. Frost will be offering slab building techniques, wheel throwing, as well as the use of other materials to encourage multi media works.

Cliff Fell says his Creative Writing course is for writers of all levels who want to use the three days to explore and share writing solutions, ideas and possibilities in poetry, fiction and non fiction. He will also cover publishing opportunities.

All enquiries and enrolments should be done directly with each tutor as detailed.
