The Regional Art Development Initiative (RADi) has announced the three-day Art Expo Nelson 2014 will take place on July 4-6 at the Trafalgar Centre.

This year's event was highly successful with more than 4500 visitors and nearly $130,000 worth of art sold, which was a double-figure increase from the 2012 inaugural expo.

Amanda Ledger was one of the high sellers at this year's expo, with 12 sales of her screen prints, impressive for a first-time entrant working from her kitchen table.

"After completing a screen printing workshop with Lisa Grennell last year, I learned a lot, and found Lisa to be a really encouraging tutor," says Ledger. "She encouraged me to apply to Art Expo Nelson with a belief of a good chance".

Ledger was not only selected to exhibit but also became one of the 15 finalists in the Gilded Edge Paramount Art Award. Although she did not win the $2000 award, Ledger was encouraged by being selected.

"It did make me believe that what I was producing was good, and good enough to carry on and do more," she says.

That is exactly what Ledger is doing with work currently exhibited at Richmond Picture Framers.

"I will definitely be applying again now I have the self-belief to keep learning and creating."

Funding and sponsorship proposals are already under way with Fresh Choice and Pomeroy's Tea and Coffee as platinum sponsors and Richmond Picture Framers and Haven Motors already signed up as gold sponsors.

Gill Starling is co-owner of Richmond Picture Framers which is the new sponsor for the Paramount Art Award.

"Being this year's sponsor for the Paramount Art Award will definitely be a highlight of 2014 for us," says Starling. "Our relationship with artists is really important so this is one way to show our appreciation and support of their work".

For 2014, RADi is seeking more than 100 selected artists across a variety of media. Artist applications are open for any artist residing in the South Island.

Project manager Nic Foster is excited to announce applications are open. "We are confident this will be a bigger and more exciting event than 2013 and really looking to encourage all Nelson and Tasman artists to apply to enter this large local art expo."
