Nelson legal high retailers have cleared their shelves of the now-banned products this morning, but one says it will create an underground market.

Police and Ministry of Health enforcement officers were visiting all retailers of psychoactive substances today to ensure the products, banned by legislation that took effect at midnight, were no longer for sale.

Co-owner of Nelson's Be Adult Boutique, Katherine Ann Hemi, said it was "business as usual" at her Vanguard St store this morning.

"I had a business before this, and I will have a business after it." She said she had sold out of legal high product yesterday and her shelves were cleared of it.

However, she feared people would still have access to it on an unregulated, underground market.
