A German tourist last seen almost two months ago has made contact with a friend in Golden Bay, saying he "got lost", police said today.
Police this week appealed for help to find Richard Schwabe, after the last known contact with the 19-year-old happened on March 17.
Schwabe indicated then that he planned to walk the Heaphy Track from Golden Bay to Buller.
He was reported missing earlier this week by a friend.
Police said Schwabe was in New Zealand on a working holiday visa and was due to leave the country next month. They had no confirmed information that he had entered the Heaphy Track area.
Police spokeswoman Barbara Dunn said today police had yet to speak with Schwabe, but he had made contact with a friend in Golden Bay, who had reported that Schwabe "got lost".
