Nelson tops survey of travellers
A travel website has found Nelson has the highest-rated accommmodation in the country.
Wotif analysed more than 160,000 New Zealand reviews on its site to find Nelson the winner, narrowly beating Napier to rank No 1 with a review score of 4.32 (out of 5) compared with Napier's 4.30.
Both cities were both above the overall national score of 4.16.
Wotif's New Zealand product manager, Renee Piggott, said Nelson was given the highest score by solo travellers and was also popular with couples and people travelling with friends or for business.
"The words reviewers used the most to describe Nelson accommodation were ‘friendly' and ‘service' which suggests why the small city at the top of the south may have edged ahead of the other cities," Piggott said.
Napier was rated the highest by group travellers, and Piggott said the word ‘views' featured frequently in the Art Deco Capital's reviews.
"It's great to see that two of our smaller cities have taken out the top two spots. It shows the high level of accommodation being offered in both these cities," she said.
New Zealand's average of 4.16 also beat the Australian average of 4.07.
Across all the cities, families left the lowest review scores and couples the highest. Families favoured New Plymouth and Tauranga took out the group traveller type.
Women were the more prevalent reviewers with 41 per cent more reviews than men, and gave higher scores across all the cities.
The Nelson accommodation available on the Wotif site has 52 listings and includes bed and breakfasts, motor lodges, hotels, apartments and backpackers.
Nelson Tasman Tourism chief executive Lynda Keane said the result was "fantastic news and not unexpected".
"The region does position itself as a quality, premium destination," she said. "It's really pleasing to hear."
