A week-long festival will see Richmond host big screen movies, an old time dance, cooking demonstrations, fashion parades, a sports expo and fitness classes to tempt people to get out and shake the winter blues.

Organised by the Tasman District Council and Richmond Unlimited, the Winterruption festival, from Monday, June 23, sees Richmond Mall become the venue for daily fashion parades and cooking demonstrations, along with associated wine tastings. Regional personalities, including Tasman Mayor Richard Kempthorne, will take to the catwalk, showing off the latest in winter fashion from local retailers.

The cooking demonstrations will see chefs and food experts sharing their top tips to prepare and cook healthy, hearty and nutritious winter feeds on a budget.

Richmond Town Hall will be transformed into an old time dance venue and Sundial Square and car park will become a sports showcase with in-line hockey, skateboarding and roller derby exhibition matches on display. Spectators will be able to shoot hoops with- and challenge - the Nelson Giants to a game of three-on-three street basketball.

The town hall will be blacked out for the festival's final day for a big-screen showing of Kiwi Flyer.
