Police are continuing an investigation into a serious assault in central Nelson which has left a man with serious head injuries in a critical condition in Wellington Hospital.
A 19-year-old and a 27-year-old were in police custody yesterday and were due to appear in the Nelson District Court charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Nelson Bays area commander Inspector Steve Greally said today that the 40-year-old victim remained in a critical condition in an induced coma in Wellington Hospital, where he was transferred from Nelson.
He said police were expecting a further update on his condition later today.
Greally said that the victim and the suspects in the Saturday night attack were "loosely connected".
"It was not a random attack but we're still in the early stages of the investigation," he said.
The victim suffered serious head injuries after the attack outside a Rutherford St house shortly before 11.30pm on Saturday.
Greally said it happened on an area of Rutherford St near Van Diemen St.
Police were yesterday speaking with a number of witnesses and were not looking for anyone else in relation to the matter.
