A man left with serious head injuries after an assault in central Nelson late on Saturday is in a stable condition in Wellington Hospital's intensive care unit, a hospital spokesman said today.
Nelson police are continuing an investigation into the assault which resulted in the 40-year-old man being flown to Wellington in a critical condition.
A 19-year-old and a 27-year-old were in police custody and were due to appear in the Nelson District Court charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Nelson Bays area commander Inspector Steve Greally said yesterday that the victim and the suspects in the Saturday night attack were "loosely connected" and that police were still in the early stages of the investigation.
The victim suffered serious head injuries outside a Rutherford St house shortly before 11.30pm on Saturday. Greally said it happened on an area of Rutherford St near Van Diemen St. Police were not looking for anyone else in relation to the matter.
