The Maitai River is getting a dye job this week, with sewers under the river being tested for leaks.

The Nelson City Council is advising residents not to be alarmed by bright green colours in the waterway as fluorescent dye is being used to test a gravity pressure sewer under the river near the Collingwood St bridge.

The testing is being done as part of continuing investigations into E coli found in the lower Maitai River.

Any dye leaking into the river will show if there is a leak in the pipeline.

The council said it had used the non-toxic dye designed for this type of investigation work two years ago with no problems being found in the pipe.
