Two men charged in relation to a serious assault in Nelson earlier this month have been remanded in custody pending further court appearances.

Horace Hone Rolleston, 19, and Harley Rewi Rudolph, 27, appeared in the Nelson District Court yesterday via audio-visual link from Christchurch prison where they are being held on a charge each of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Rolleston has denied the charge. He sought bail, which was denied and he was remanded in custody to September 4 for a case review hearing.

The two were charged following a serious assault on June 14 that left a 40-year-old man with serious head injuries after the attack outside a Rutherford St house shortly before 11.30pm.

The injured man was initially in a critical condition and was transferred to Wellington Hospital's intensive care unit. He was transferred to a ward late last week and was in a stable condition yesterday.

Rudolph has been remanded without plea for two weeks, and was due to appear again on July 8. Bail was denied.
