The MetService has warned a nasty trough set to bring heavy rain to regions including parts of Nelson was waiting over the Tasman Sea, and was due to hit the South Island’s West Coast tonight.

The service had put in place a Severe Weather Watch for the Richmond Ranges from 9am to 6pm on Wednesday with 50 -70mm of rain possible.

Highest intensities of 15mm an hour are likely to be mid to late morning of 15mm an hour.

Areas of Nelson west of Motueka are also likely to get heavy rain from the approaching system, with 90-120mm of rainfall from about 6am to 3pm tomorrow.

Golden Bay rivers are most likely to be affected by this forecast.

The rain is likely to be accompanied by strong northerly winds.
