A fine, crisp day and a free family event drew a big crowd to the Family Fun Day at Founders Heritage Park.

More than 3000 people turned up yesterday to celebrate Children's Day.

They enjoyed a host of activities ranging from pony rides to train rides, along with bouncy castles and face painting.

Brenda Holdaway, who chairs the organising committee, described it as a fantastic day.

So many people showed up simply because they were looking for family activities to do, she said.

The event was mainly aimed at under-5s and organised by Sport Tasman, Public Health, Barnados, Porse, Nelson Tasman Kindergartens and the Parents Centre.

Funding for the event came from the Nelson City Council, Pub Charities and the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board.
