Nelson mayor Rachel Reese will be joined by council staff member Nicky McDonald on a council-paid trip to Japanese city Miyazu.
Reese and her partner were invited to Nelson's sister city by the Miyazu mayor, Shoji Inoue, to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Miyazu as a city, for three days in October.
The governance committee agreed yesterday to approve the council's acting strategy and environment group manager McDonald accompanying the mayor on the trip.
The cost of Reese and McDonald's trip will be covered by the council through its sister city budget while Reese's partner's trip will be self-funded. However, figures for the trip are still to be confirmed with tickets not yet being booked.
The council's chief executive, Clare Hadley, said it was best practice for staff to travel with the mayor on overseas trips.
The committee's deputy chairman, Luke Acland, asked Hadley for more detail on how this was best practice in local government.
She said having worked for five local authorities she had never known the mayor to go offshore without the chief executive or staff member.
Committee chairman Ian Barker said it had not always been the practice to send staff but he supported the idea.
Councillor Gaile Noonan said it was a good idea for the mayor to be accompanied by a staff member.
