The German man killed on Moutere Highway was a "popular member of staff" at the company where he did horticultural work, his former employer says.

Thomas Kochwasser, 40, died when he was struck by a passing car between Redwood Valley Rd and Greenacres Rd, about 6.20pm last Sunday.

Waimea Nurseries managing director Mike Simpson said Kochwasser had worked for his company as a casual horticultural worker in 2013 and for a few months this year.

Kochwasser had stopped working for Waimea Nurseries about a month ago.

He had "fitted in reasonably well" and seemed to be a "popular member of the staff," Simpson said.

Kochwasser had lived in New Zealand for a number of years but had no family here.

His family in Germany had been informed of his death.

The police serious crash unit was investigating the incident, and why Kochwasser was on the road at the time he was hit.

Police had thanked members of the public who had come forward with information relating to the incident and those who assisted at the scene.
