Retailers said they had seen a boost in sales in the last week with the Local Government NZ conference coming to town.
Palm Boutique owner Jane Palm said she'd had many women coming in who were ducking out of the conference for a little shopping on the side. "There has been a surge this week with women from all over the country," she said.
Craig Taylor, owner of Taylors We Love Shoes, said they had seen a number of people from the conference with some coming back for a third time and popping out during lunchtime to make the most of the store's shoe sale.
Karen Jordan of women's fashion boutique Jays on Bridge said she had not noticed any significant difference, but the town was generally a lot "buzzier" anyway. "Business is great. I'm not so sure it's the free parking as much as the stress that's been removed by the attitude of the wardens."
