A Brooklyn man has died after crashing his homemade motorised bicycle on Brooklyn Valley Rd, near Motueka.

The accident happened about noon on Monday and there are no indications that any other vehicles were involved, said Sergeant Rob Crawford of Motueka at the scene of the accident.

Thomas Patrick McCarthy, known as Colin, aged 52, was riding the bike down Brooklyn Valley Rd towards Motueka when he crashed into a ditch and died at the scene, said a police spokeswoman.

The accident happened about 3.5km up the gravel road from Brooklyn, a village west of Motueka.

Crawford said the serious crash investigation that was underway would focus on the motorised bicycle, which he described as "not manufactured".

He said that it was too early in the investigation to make any comment about what had happened.

Crawford said it could be six to eight weeks before the results of the investigation would be known and that the death would be referred to the coroner.
