Machines are finishing what mother nature started with the demolition of a Nelson house badly damaged in the Easter storm.

Three Collingwood St homes were hit by a 35-45m redwood tree that crashed down in the wild wind gusts that wreaked havoc across the city on April 17.

One of the houses is now being demolished because of the extensive damage. Contractor Rod Thomson Contracting said a digger was being used to pull the house apart.

The tree also smashed through the back of Jules Hobbs' home next door, forcing his family to move out. Arborists cut the tree into sections and removed the pieces using a crane brought from Christchurch.
