Vegetarian food and Americana music are set to help fund an expansion of a free meal programme in Nelson.

Food For Families Nelson is a volunteer-run organisation that uses donated food to cook and serve through its community meals programme.

It puts on a weekly meal at the Victoria Community Centre but the group is also expanding into Tahunanui and fundraising to take their meals mobile.

The free meal is cancelled tonight, and in its place is a fundraiser to raise money to expand, as spokesman Martin Reading has found there is a need for the free meals through Nelson.

The group has purchased a caravan so it can go mobile, and it needs help to pay off the purchase and get it ready for use. From August 26, the group will be putting on dinners at the Tahunanui Community Centre as well.

"We had excess produce so we wanted to expand, and we got a call and said it was needed there."

Once he had the caravan he planned to ask around businesses for donations to renovate it and install a commercial kitchen in it.

From there, he wanted to put on additional dinners throughout Nelson.

At tonight's fundraiser, musicians Paul Jeffries and Glen Hayes will play classics from United States musicians such as The Eagles, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Tickets, which include a "sumptuous vegetarian banquet", can be bought at Bin Inn Nelson for $30 or purchased at the night, at the Victory Community Centre.
