Nelson police say a person is helping them with their inquiries into an incident at Richmond's Star and Garter tavern that left a woman with a serious eye injury.

Detective Sergeant Mark Kaveney said today they had received a good response to a call for help from the public to identify a group of people involved in the incident, but still want to speak to anyone else who was there.

Police said a group was ejected from the bar about 3am yesterday and shortly after one of them threw a glass object back into the tavern's smoking area. The glass shattered and a shard lodged into the eye of a woman patron who was seated in the area.

The woman suffered serious injuries to her eye and was operated on in Nelson Hospital yesterday. A spokesperson said today she was in a stable condition.

Police said yesterday they wanted to speak to members of the group who were ejected from the bar, including the person who threw the glass object.

Kaveney said they were now working through a number of issues with the person who was currently helping them.

"We'd still like members of the public who witnessed anything to come forward and speak to us."

Anyone with information can contact Detective Sergeant Mark Kaveney, Ph 546 3840. Anonymous information can also be given by calling Crimestoppers, Ph 0800 555 111.
