Teen seriously injured in smash
An 18-year-old woman is in a critical condition at Wellington Hospital's intensive care unit after a two-car crash near Murchison yesterday.
Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter crewman Hamish Pirie said she sustained severe head injuries in the crash.
A man in his 60s who was driving a light truck is also critical after receiving severe chest injuries. He was taken to Nelson Hospital and a hospital spokesperson said he was in a serious condition. "They both had massive trauma," Pirie said.
The rescue helicopter was sent to State Highway 6 near the Owen River after the man's truck and the woman's car collided at about 2.50pm.
A police spokesman said the highway was closed, but diversions were in place.
The cause of the crash was not yet known.
