The Nelson Solar City pilot project has passed first base, with the first of 25 homes and businesses selected for the project now online with the web-based solar monitoring service SolarTrak.

Andrew Booth of Solar City New Zealand, which is leading the development, said the pilot scheme was the next step in testing the Solar City concept, which aims to see solar water heating installed in 1000 Nelson homes and businesses. The 25 homes and businesses were selected from more than 200 applications.

The SolarTrak smart software monitors and improves the performance of solar hot water systems, allowing homeowners to check that their systems are working as efficiently as possible.

Mr Booth said the pilot homes and businesses were drawn from across Nelson and had to meet specific criteria in terms of position (north-facing vantage), number of occupants and energy use.

More than 70 free home energy assessments were conducted as part of the selection process, Mr Booth said.

He said the Nelson Fire Station, which also houses the St John Ambulance service, and the new Saxton Field Sports Centre were among the businesses taking part.
