Bids for 'crap art' climbing

Bids for a sculpture of Nelson MP and Environment Minister Nick Smith's head, made from cow manure, have reached $3000 on Trade Me and are still climbing.
Canterbury artist and writer Sam Mahon put the bust of Nick Smith on the auction site last week and it had attracted more than 100 bids by this morning, though the reserve has not yet been met. The auction closes this Friday evening.
Mr Mahon made the bust as a protest at water pollution from dairy farms. He sculpted it from organic cow manure, which, the artist admitted on the auction website "undermined the statement slightly".
The bust sits on a steel stand "slightly right of centre".
Dr Smith has laughed off the jibe, calling it "crap art".
The bust will be exhibited at Christchurch's Centre of Contemporary Art for two weeks.
