A rolled digger on the Stoke Bowling Green yesterday caused a ruckus with passers-by on Main Rd Stoke, many of whom stopped to take photos.
Nelson City Council projects engineer Phil Hamblin said the incident happened when the digger was loading a truck and "the platform he was working on gave out from underneath him".
He said he would not know for sure what had happened until a report into the incident was finalised. He said the driver was unhurt and had been wearing his seatbelt.
Mr Hamblin said the adjacent Stoke Tennis Courts were expanding and the bowling turf was being pulled up and replaced with an asphalt base and synthetic surface. Construction on the $476,000 project started this week.
No-one was available to comment on the incident from Downer EDI Works, the contractor managing the project on behalf of Nelson City Council.
