Niamh and Caitlin Berry-Kilgour like to show that everyone can make a difference when it comes to helping others in need.

Wanting to do something to help the victims of the devastating September Samoa tsunami, the 11-year-old twins decided that holding a mufti day at their school, Nelson Preparatory School, was a good idea.

The idea paid off. The school's 98 pupils took part in yesterday's mufti day, raising $226.50 for the Red Cross Samoa Earthquake and Tsunami Appeal.

New Zealand Red Cross Tasman area manager Fraser Benson said it was a "brilliant effort" and it was wonderful to see children having fundraising ideas to help others.

The Red Cross appeal has raised more than $2.6 million in public and corporate donations, which will go towards delivering relief and early recovery help to up to 5000 people for 18 months. The aid includes community-based health care and first aid, support programmes, emergency shelter and helping the country prepare for disasters.
