The Nelson City Council has approved an extension to the alcohol ban at Tahunanui Reserve on Saturday, December 5, from 2pm for The Big Tahuna event.

The extension was requested by Nelson police to help them manage potential anti-social behaviour and ensure public safety. The recommendation was approved by councillors at a special meeting yesterday.

A public notice published yesterday advised the public that the liquor ban would be extended on December 5 at the Tahunanui Reserve, from 2pm until 7am the following day.

Nelson Mayor Kerry Marshall said today he was not at the meeting, but understood the approval was "mechanical but necessary".

The extension excluded the Lions playground where a liquor ban was in place 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
