Students hit the news airwaves

Students from nine schools in Nelson showed off their technical skills this week as part of the annual Information Communication Technology expo at Victory School.
Students from Nelson Intermediate broadcast their NIS News programme over the two-day event.
Nelson Intermediate deputy principal Jacques Munro said the school originally began the project about five weeks ago, with students putting together a news show that ran for 30 minutes every Friday afternoon, broadcast to classroom computers.
"It is all student-directed, and it's going really well. There is a huge interest, not just within the school but others are interested as well."
Mr Munro said the programme was a way of giving students the opportunity to be involved in production.
"It was interesting to see where they were four weeks ago and where they are now. If What Now saw them over those two days, they would snap them up. That's how good they were."
Mr Munro said that eventually the idea was to give each class an opportunity to run the show.
He said this year's expo was a huge success.
"I would say compared to last year it has gone up three levels, it has been really interactive, with kids sharing and using software which has been great to see."
Victory Primary School teacher Mike Rankin, who helped organise the expo, said it was fantastic to see the diverse range of students' work on display.
"It just shows we have all come a long way in a short time."
