A dolphin and her calf were found stranded in Nelson Haven on Saturday.

The mother survived the stranding and swam away after being transported to Cable Bay and refloated, but her calf died.

Motueka Department of Conservation biodiversity manager Gavin Udy said DOC received a call about the two common dolphins on Friday, but they were unable to be located.

The department received a second call on Saturday and the mother dolphin was located straight away in the haven, near Boulder Bank Drive.

By that time, the tide was on its way out and the animal was pretty high and dry, Mr Udy said.

The calf, which was less than a week old, was found in the haven near Marybank Drive.

The dolphins were driven to Cable Bay to be refloated, but the calf died of shock en route, Mr Udy said. The mother quickly got her bearings and swam away after a few minutes.
