A Christchurch woman was flown to Nelson Hospital this morning after being thrown through the front window of the truck she was a passenger in.

St John Ambulance operations manager Jon Leach said the accident occurred about 5.30am on State Highway 6 just south of the Owen River bridge.

Its cause was unknown but it appeared the truck left the road and went into a bank.

The woman, 43, suffered serious injuries to her head, chest and back. The 51-year-old male driver suffered minor injuries to his hip.

Both were taken to hospital by the Summit Rescue Helicopter.

Meanwhile, a 37-year-old German woman spent Christmas Eve in Nelson Hospital after falling while tramping on the Travers Sabine track on Friday night.

St John Ambulance team leader Jon Leach said the woman suffered a suspected broken ankle. Another tramper in the area had notified Police Search and Rescue of the situation by radio.

The Summit Rescue Helicopter was dispatched at 7pm and the tramper and her husband were flown to St Arnaud, where she was treated before being flown to hospital.
