The Golden Bay Holiday Park, closed because of a norovirus outbreak, is to reopen tonight.

Park owner Bob Perriam said there had been no more illness and he had been given the go-ahead by public health officials to re-open.

The latest test result of the campground's drinking water supply was given the all-clear, he said.

Mr Perriam said he had turned most people away but had accepted "a few cases where people were in transit and couldn't be placed anywhere else".

"We made sure they knew the full situation [regarding the risk of the virus] and they chose to stay in the camp."

He said he had continued to be "open and very co-operative with the health authorities".

Yesterday, there were around 50 campers still in the campground which has room to cater for 450.

Medical Officer of Health Ed Kiddle had recommended the campground at Tukurua remain closed to new arrivals until at least tonight, as further norovirus symptoms were reported on Tuesday.

He confirmed today, that subject to no more cases of anyone with with diarrhoea and vomiting through to 5pm tonight, he would withdraw his recommendation of closure.

Results from faecal samples taken to test for norovirus will not be available until tomorrow.

The camp's water supply has been chlorinated and a notice to boil water remains in place.
