Anyone visiting Nelson leading up to next year's Rugby World Cup will be left in no doubt of the city's crucial role in the development of our national game.

An unveiling of a logo, designed to promote the region in the context of the Rugby World Cup and beyond, was held yesterday at the Nelson Rugby Football Club.

It features a historical rugby player and the words "1870 First Game" to signify that the first game of rugby played in New Zealand, in 1870, was held between a Nelson College side and the Nelson Football Club at the Botanics.

The logo, designed by Nelson graphic designer Andy Clover, will be freely available for all residents, businesses, organisations and visitors to use, without charge.

Aldo Miccio, a Nelson city councillor who is chairman of the RWC 2011 Nelson steering group, said the logo was a reflection of what made Nelson different from the rest of the country.

"We know that every region will be promoting their national parks and beaches ... our point of difference that no-one can deny and no-one can compete with is that we are the birthplace of rugby in New Zealand."

He said Nelson had a pre-eminent place in New Zealand's sporting history, something that was important to highlight.

"It presents an opportunity now and well beyond 2011 for every organisation, small business, large business and group to establish their involvement in the upcoming events that will celebrate our strong rugby heritage."

Mr Miccio said the steering group aimed to leave a lasting legacy from the Rugby World Cup, promote regional cohesion and promote Nelson as a must-see destination.

Leading up to the tournament – during which Nelson will host two matches – a volunteer programme would be organised, a school education programme run and a re-enactment festival held, along with more long lunches.

Nelson Tasman Tourism chief executive Paul Davis said it was crucial Nelson stood out.

The World Cup was important for the community and "we need to make the most of it", he said.

Mr Davis said there was a desire within the business community to realise the potential of the tournament.

The logo will be available from the Nelson City Council's website from Monday.
