Thousands attend annual food fete

An estimated 3000 people helped mark Waitangi Day by coming together and experiencing food from an array of cultures at the annual Kai Festival at Founders Heritage Park and Whakatu Marae.
Park facilities manager Maria Anderson said the event was fantastic and it was phenomenal to see families come together and celebrate their food.
Ms Anderson said food stalls tended to have an international flavour at Founders and more of a Pacific flavour at Whakatu Marae. She said the hangi was really popular at the marae, where an earth hangi and another cooked in drums were laid.
Standout food for her was a Sri Lankan curry and a smoked salmon dish.
There was also entertainment.
Planning is already under way for next year's festival on Waitangi Day, which will have "a Sunday twist to it".
