Are you aged between 16 and 18, and interested in politics and youth issues? Nelson MP Nick Smith might have a job for you.

Dr Smith is advertising for young people to apply for a week-long role as Nelson's youth parliamentarian in July.

He said he wanted to hear from young people who had a passion for Nelson and New Zealand.

"They should be involved in their local community and interested in politics and youth issues."

Youth Parliament 2010 was a chance for the Nelson Youth MP to have a say on how the country should be run by debating and voting on major issues affecting our young people.

Dr Smith said the Youth Parliament was particularly topical this year, with serious consideration being given by the Government to raising both the driving and drinking age.

Unemployment, which is hitting youth, is another issue the Youth Parliament will be debating, he said.

"This is a golden opportunity for a motivated and opinionated young person to put themselves into the shoes of an MP, see how Parliament works, and be willing to stand up and have their voice heard."

Dr Smith said he would write to the principals of five Nelson secondary schools – Garin College, Nayland College, Nelson College, Nelson College for Girls and Waimea College – seeking applications.

Applicants need to apply in writing to Dr Smith's electorate office by April 16.
