A Nelson street overlooking the waterfront was cordoned off as armed police and organised crime unit members raided a house shortly after dawn today.

Police vehicles drove in convoy to Poynters Cres about 7.30am, parking at the bottom of the street so police could move on to a property to carry out a search warrant.

Later this morning, organised crime unit head Detective Sergeant Brett Greer was guarded about discussing the operation.

"At the moment no-one has been charged. We're talking to a male. I don't even want to say what it's about."

Police found one person inside the house but it wasn't the person they were looking for.

The street cordon was lifted within 30 minutes of police moving in. The person sought by police was "eventually" found elsewhere, he said.

Asked if the operation was part of a wider investigation, Mr Greer replied: "Not necessarily".
