Recycling proves huge hit

It's gone from a famine to a feast for community-minded Victory couple Karen and Daryl Brandford.
Last month The Nelson Mail reported that the couple needed more bikes for their non-profit business Victory Bike Recyclers, which sees them restore old bikes and sell them back to the public at bargain prices.
The response from the public was immediate, with dozens of Nelsonians donating old bikes that had been sitting unused in the garage or shed.
"We've had a fantastic response," Mr Brandford said. "We had about 150 or 160 bikes dropped off." Their backyard is now chock-a-block with bikes, as is one side of their property, and Mr Brandford now has his hands full bringing them up to scratch.
"We don't want him to work at night," Mrs Brandford said.
"But he might have to," she laughed.
The past month has been hectic for the couple, but they are vowing not to work on Sundays any more to ensure they get a proper break and can spend time with their family.
People had come from as far as Motueka to drop off bikes, and they said they were grateful to the public for their support.
They are always willing to accept donations of bikes and parts, but at present they were especially looking for rear wheels.
As well as donations, the couple buy bikes from recycling centres and police auctions, but can't purchase them direct from the public in case the bike has been stolen.
The most expensive bikes cost $40, and all profits are used to purchase bikes and parts.
They have proved popular, especially with those on low incomes, students and travellers.
Those wanting to donate bikes or parts or buy a restored bike can visit Victory Bike Recyclers at 187 Vanguard St between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Saturday.
