Nelson's Boulder Bank is a whole lot cleaner and the Nelson Coastguard about $3000 closer to a planned new boat, following the efforts of hundreds of people yesterday.

The 300 tickets to take part in the Rotary Club of Nelson West's fundraising cleanup walk along the Boulder Bank yesterday sold out days before, the club's projects co-ordinator Dick Carter said.

"It was a fantastic day. Everyone enjoyed the opportunity to walk along the Boulder Bank and they did a great job cleaning it up.

"We had to stop selling tickets a week out from yesterday, and demand was so great we could have sold as many again," Mr Carter said.

People were taken in buses from Wakefield Quay to Boulder Bank Dr for the start of the walk, and were then ferried back to shore from the Boulder Bank by the Coastguard, the Nelson Surf Lifesaving Club, vessels from Catamaran Sailing and Launch Charters, the Port Nelson harbourmaster and a boat operated by one of the Rotary club members, Mr Carter said.

The amount of rubbish collected required an extra truck and trailer to tow it away and the Nelson City Council waived dumping charges, Mr Carter said.

He said the volunteers easily handled the 10 kilometre walk from Boulder Bank Dr to the lighthouse, but they were surprised at the number of plastic bottles washed ashore as rubbish.

The journey was helped by bach owners who provided cups of tea along the way.

Author Karen Warren, who wrote Rolling Stones: Nelson's Boulder Bank, and Brian Kidson, a descendant of one of the early lighthouse keepers, provided historical insights into the Boulder Bank and lighthouse. Craig Terris of Port Nelson spoke about plans to refurbish the lighthouse lamp.

Mr Carter said the event was such a success the club might make it an annual event. Proceeds raised from ticket sales will go towards a new vessel for the Nelson Coastguard.
