Optimism as Rainbow reopens after snowfalls

Nelsonians still have time to get a powder day in at Rainbow Ski Field with the skifield reopening tomorrow morning after a dump of snow this week.
Rainbow Ski Area spokesman Hamish Neill said the field had received a series of snowfalls over the last two weeks with a final 20 to 30-centimetre dump yesterday. There was an average base of 75cm.
"These snowfalls have changed the landscape significantly. Groomed slopes will include top-to-bottom runs for intermediate through to advanced, with off-piste skiing also available for the first time this season.
"The beginners' area has been topped up and is perfect for reopening," Mr Neill said.
Mr Neill said he was delighted the more exciting areas of the field could now open, with freshly groomed runs, and off-piste areas opening for the first time.
Fine weather was expected at the weekend, he said, and more snow was due early next week, which skifield management hoped would further consolidate the base. He was optimistic the field would remain open until the end of September.
