Motorists travelling tonight are being advised to check road conditions as a cold blast moves over the country.

Nelson weather consultant John Mathieson said the fast-moving cold front was expected to reach Nelson mid-afternoon and it would be cold tonight.

However, the cold is expected to be shortlived, with showers clearing from most places tomorrow and temperatures recovering.

The cold snap follows a mild month in Nelson.

Mr Mathieson said August temperatures were above average. The mean daily maximum at 13.8 degrees was 0.5 degrees above average. The hottest day reached 17.4.

Sunshine did well to be just 3 per cent below average given there were 18 rainfall days, he said.

Total rainfall was 668.8mm, up on 613.1mm average.
