Retail spending in Nelson was down 1.5 per cent last month compared with April last year, according to the latest figures from Paymark.
Nationally, spending dipped only by 0.3 per cent with Paymark, which processes about 75 per cent of all electronic transactions in New Zealand, attributing much of the fall to the three national holidays, and five Sundays and Mondays in April.
Spending in the Nelson region slipped from $72.3 million to $71.2m.
