Four off licences, including two wineries, sold alcohol to under-age 16-year-old volunteers in the most recent jointly run operation checking liquor retailers.

Alcohol harm reduction officer Sergeant Mike Fitzsimons, of Nelson, said the range and frequency of controlled purchase operations were increasing in the Nelson Bays police area.

The four premises caught in Saturday's operation face prosecution under the Sale of Liquor Act and the businesses would be referred to the Liquor Licensing Authority. The operations are run by the police, Public Health and the licensing agencies from the two councils.
