An 81-year-old Nelson man has admitted sexually abusing a teenage boy eight years ago.

Hugh Nielsen admitted two representative charges of indecent assault on a boy aged 12-16 between September 2004 and May 2005 when he appeared in the Nelson District Court.

A third charge was withdrawn by the Crown.

Nielsen pleaded guilty to the charges after the first day of a trial into the case and hearing the victim give evidence.

Nielsen was remanded on bail until June 14 for sentence.

Lawyer Tony Bamford said Nielsen had indicated he was willing to go through the Restorative Justice process if the victim was willing. If the case went to Restorative Justice sentencing on June 14 could be delayed due to the length of time it would take to complete that process.

Judge Tony Zohrab said jail had to be a starting point for his sentence due to the serious nature of the charges, but he called for a report to also investigate whether home detention was appropriate.

He said it was clear from seeing the victim give evidence that he was a troubled young man and he called for an emotional harm report as well.
