A slip that blocked the main accessway to the Kahurangi National Park will not be cleared for about another five weeks.

The Department of Conservation and the Tasman District Council have secured a contractor to remove 20,000 cubic metres of rock, mainly marble, that closed the Graham Valley Rd South Branch.

DOC Motueka visitor assets and historic programme manager Mark Townsend said work would begin on Monday.

An optional access through the Cobb Valley had heavy snow on it lately and required four-wheel-drive access. The Wangapeka track could also be used.

People wanting to use these routes should contact DOC first.

The road would be locked at the bottom of the hill, he said.
