All-day parking will be available once more in Wakatu Square car park in central Nelson from next Monday, reversing last year's decision to restrict it to a three-hour time limit.
The change has been made in response to falling use in the parking square over recent months and the need to ensure adequate funding is available for the improved public transport service that began in the last financial year, the city council said today.
A decision was made last year to increase parking fees and place a time limit on Wakatu Square to help fund the improved bus service between Nelson and Richmond and around Nelson city.
The removal of all-day parking from Wakatu Square pleased retailers in the area, but it appeared to have pushed out city workers who parked there all day, to free parking on city fringes.
The council said in May that parking revenue was down $319,000.
The parking fee for Wakatu Square will remain at $1 an hour.
Car parks around the outside edge of the square nearest to businesses will retain their one-hour time limit.
An overall parking study is due to get under way in March next year and the findings of that study may affect how parking is managed in central Nelson.
