Having a ball on Dad's Day
Fun for fathers at Parents CentreBILL MOORE
Organised chaos best described the scene at the Lodge Rooms in Nile St on Saturday when the Nelson District Parents Centre held its first Dads' Day for fathers and their small children.
Led by Lee Corlett of Sporting Initiatives Nelson, a dozen dads and toddlers, plus a couple of mums, were there to take part in a range of fun activities designed to highlight ways to help the children develop motor skills.
There was much laughter and excitement as the children and their fathers followed Mr Corlett's instructions on using a range of play equipment including balls, hoops, mats and cones from Sport Tasman's equipment trailer.
"I think dads are sometimes a bit scared of what they can do with their kids," Parents Centre president Bev Hamilton said. "So much is mother-focused. We thought we'd get the dads involved."
The day was timed to work in with Fathers' Day, and Ms Hamilton said it was likely that they might run it again next year.
Tim Saunders, who was attending with two-year-old son Leo, gave the day the thumbs-up.
"It's really good," he said. "It's not often that fathers get to spend time like this with your kids."
